Nile Lechwe
The majestic Nile Lechwe, also known as Kobus Megaceros, belongs to the Bovidae family, sharing its heritage with bison and buffalo. Thriving in the lush watershed of the Nile River, these aquatic antelopes have evolved to flourish in watery environments. They were honored with the name “Mrs. Gray’s waterbuck” in tribute to Dr. J. E. Gray’s wife, Maria E. Gray, by 19th-century British Museum curator Dr. J. E. Gray. Found in the captivating landscapes of Ethiopia and Sudan, these remarkable creatures are not only exceptional swimmers but also produce a distinctive croaking sound. Interestingly, it’s the females that emit a call resembling the melodious croak of a toad, adding a unique charm to their already intriguing nature.
