American Bison

American Bison Hunting in Texas
Native to North America - Gestation: about 9.5 months

Bison, the largest land mammals in North America, are truly remarkable creatures. Swift and agile, they can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour, outpacing even horses, and clear obstacles as high as 6 feet with ease. Their strength and versatility allow them to spin quickly, navigate high fences, and even swim with vigor. Not to mention their unique ability to “plow snow” with their heads is truly astounding. However, the 19th century saw a tragic decline in bison populations as European American settlement expanded into the Great Plains, bringing these magnificent animals to the brink of extinction.
