Gemsbok

Native to Namib and Kalahari deserts, in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa and formerly Angola (where they are considered extirpated) - Gestation: about 9 – 10 months

The thick skin on a bull’s neck and shoulders serves as formidable armor during battles. There exist bachelor herds composed of young males and nursery herds exclusively housing females and their calves. Their remarkable ability to survive in the desert heat is truly fascinating. Unfazed by the scorching sun, they employ a remarkable mechanism known as rete mirabile. This ingenious process involves cooling the blood flowing to the brain by exchanging heat with blood from the nasal membrane, effectively regulating their body’s heat balance and allowing them to thrive in the harshest desert conditions. In addition to this, there exist bachelor herds composed of young males and nursery herds exclusively housing females and their calves.
