Waterbuck

Waterbuck - Triple R Ranch - TX
Native to sub-Saharan Africa, including countries in the South, East, and parts of the West and North - Gestation: about 7 – 8 months

The majestic waterbuck roams the lush savanna grasslands near water sources in the enchanting landscape south of the Sahara. This magnificent creature, known as the defassa waterbuck, boasts a striking brown-gray coat adorned with long, shaggy hair and distinct white patches above its eyes, around its nose, mouth, and throat. What sets the waterbuck apart is its fascinating adaptability to its watery habitat. It secretes an oily (not so pleasant smelling) substance from its sweat glands that not only keeps its coat waterproof but also aids in the search for a mate. Additionally, the waterbuck’s seemingly excessive hair around its neck is not merely for the show—each strand is hollow, providing essential buoyancy for effortless swimming and enabling it to gracefully keep its head above water. This remarkable species is a true marvel of nature, perfectly suited to its environment and deserving of our admiration for its unique and extraordinary features.
